School Board Member Matthew John Markling is very proud that the Lakewood City Schools, as a school district, is ranked "Excellent" for the State School Report Card for the 2008-2009 school year! Grant and Lincoln Elementary Schools, as well as Garfield and Harding Middle Schools, also obtained "Excellent" rankings. Congratulations to Lakewood's students, parents, staff, administration, school board, and Community on a job well done!
For the second year, School Board Member Matthew John Markling served on the Host Committee for "The Mayor's Charity Ball," which was held on Saturday, November 14, 2009, from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Beck Center. Proceeds benefitted the Beck Center for the Arts.
On November 10, 2009, School Board Member Markling gave a presentation to educational administrators at the Ohio School Boards Association Capital Conference & Trade Show entitled, "When You Are In the 'Minority' - And, You Will Be Someday!"

On July 21, 2009, School Board Member Matthew John Markling was one of approximately 23 school board members throughout Ohio appointed by Ohio School Boards Association Executive Director Richard Lewis to serve on a 2009 focus group charged with the task of reviewing the superintendent standards and evaluations outlined in the Ohio Superintendent Evaluation System as proposed by the Buckeye Association of School Administrators and the Ohio Department of Education.
Welcome Home Joe! The Lakewood City Schools Board of Education has named Dr. P. Joseph Madak to be its new superintendent effective Aug. 1, bringing back the educator who earned State Superintendent of the Year honors in his first tenure as leader of the 6,000-student district.
School Board Member Matthew John Markling said, "When Dr. Madak announced that he wanted to come home to the Lakewood City Schools, the Board of Education could not have been more delighted. Dr. Madak established the blueprint for our current successes, and we are proud and honored to have him serve as the architect for our future successes as well. With Dr. Madak back at the helm, no challenge is insurmountable. I could not be happier to welcome Dr. Madak back home."
